September has two new moons in the northern hemisphere. The second new moon is known as the “black moon” and it occurs in the astrological sign of Libra at 7:13 PM on Friday, September 30th. The new moon is the perfect time to set new intentions or refine intentions you’ve already set.

If you’re in the habit of setting new moon intentions regularly, take some time to review what grew in the previous moon cycle from the intentions you set. I’ve been setting intentions for a long time now. This was the way in which I attracted my current romantic relationship into my life over a year ago. This was also the way in which I was able to discover what I really wanted to do with my life, among other things. Take time to be grateful for the intentions that grew to manifest. Review the ones that didn’t sprout and consider whether or not you want to refine them, restate them, or scrap them. Sometimes certain intentions take longer than one moon cycle.

Libra is a sign of balance and harmony. So if you’re especially focused on relationships of any kind, this is a good new moon to set intentions for marriage, harmonious friendships and work relationships, equality, counseling, negotiations and collaborations. This is also a potent time to release the darker aspects of relationships, like if you’re prone to codependency or quarreling just to stir things up, or if you’re indecisive or if you let yourself be trampled to appease others.

If you’ve never set new moon intentions before there are a few things of which to be aware. First, you’ll want to set aside some quiet time, about 20 or 30 minutes, at or after 7:13 PM on the 30th (up to 48 hours after) and make sure you have a pen and paper with you. Take this time to meditate and get in tune with your intuition and what it is that you really want. Be aware of the stage you are in in your life. For example, if you’re single but want a relationship, “I am getting married,” is many steps ahead of where you need to start. Start with considering what kind of mate you want to spend your life with. Focus on the characteristics of that person and the way that you want the relationship to feel. Ethical side note, don’t ever set intentions to control anyone else. It won’t work and it’s terrible karma.

Once you know what you really want to bring into your life (or patterns you want to release), write it down. Be as clear as possible. You can do this for up to ten intentions. I read this great book called New Moon Astrology recently and I believe it’s a good resource on new moon magick. I do things a little differently than the author. I write my intentions as if they are already true in the world of form. So, for example, instead of writing “I want/wish for a new job” I would know what kind of job I want and write “I am working as ____.” Everything you want already exists. It’s just a matter of drawing it to you. Writing it out as if you already have it is a magickally potent practice of faith and trust. After you’ve written your intentions out, visualize them and imagine with all your senses what it’s like to have them. When you’re done, set your intentions somewhere safe to come back and review at the next new moon. When you set them aside, release them mentally so that they can grow in your life unstifled.

On a side note, the new moon is a great time for divination. So if you want a personal card reading check out my Facebook and send me a message and I would be happy to do a reading for you. Any online readings are 4 questions for $20. And if you have any requests for topics you would like me to write about on here, let me know! I would be happy to share anything in my wheelhouse.
